However, low and behold I managed to get it working. Here's what I did.

I downloaded the XBox 360 driver pack for Windows 7 (Yes, I am quite aware I have Windows 8.1): I installed the driver pack and connected the controller. Device manager advised that there was NO driver for the After Glow Controller. Trying to go through the Manual Driver update is fruitless and just hangs device manager. Here's what I did next.

Leaving the controller connected to the USB port, I rebooted the machine. As the machine booted up, the driver was installed and all was good. If you go to Devices and Printers, the controller shows up as an AfterGlow Gamepad for XBox 360. To test, I removed the controller and re inserted it, still good.

I unplugged the controller and shut the machine down. Started it back up and logged in, then plugged the controller in, and it's still working.
